“Can I be a coach without getting a coaching credential?” I receive this question from time to time, and the answer is, “Yes.” There are many gifted individuals doing coaching who do not have recognized coach training or a credential. I suggest the better question is, “Can I be a really good coach without getting a coaching credential?” My answer here is, “No.” Why do I say that?
First, most of the coaches I know have natural gifts that lead these individuals to become coaches—a personal commitment to their own growth, a sense of calling to help others, and good relational skills. Coach training builds on these natural gifts to lead the coach to the next level—beyond competence to excellence.
Second, although I rarely have a potential client ask me about my training or credential, having those “under my belt” gives me a greater sense of confidence in my coaching. I have a stronger sense that I have something worthwhile to share with my clients.
Third, on the other hand, if you are asked to coach for an organization, you are often asked about your training and credentialing. Organizations such as denominations, educational institutions, and not-for-profit agencies choose to contract with vendors who can show their level of skill not only through references but licensure as well. This is especially helpful if you are working with an institution that is using grant funding to pay your fee.
Fourth, being a credentialed coach encourages me to be a lifelong learner. I am already inclined that way, but my credential renewal process requires that I invest in continuing education that keeps me current and stretches me in new directions professionally.
Fifth, as a credentialed coach, I am part of a coaching community. I connect with and learn from other coaches who have a similar commitment to growth and excellence. This has opened to the door for both national and international relationships that enrich my capacity as a coach.
If you want to be a really good coach, make a commitment both to coach training and a coaching credential. If you would like to learn more, please contact me.
